Grand Canyon Layers of Color in Stone & SkyThis photograph of the Grand Canyon was taken midday and shows many layers both in the landscape and in the sky. In the foreground we have in outcropping of rock while the layers of cliffs in the canyon walls extend off into the far distance. The sky is made up of multiple linear layers of clouds, while the upper atmosphere is shrouded in a deep dark blue that transitions eventually into purple and black.
