A few weeks ago I was at Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles waiting for some portrait photography clients to arrive. Since I had nothing better to do, I took a few snaps of Walt Disney Concert Hall while I waited. I let me eyes wander over the building and I focused on a few interesting shapes, intersections, and colors. Enjoy!
If you’ve been following some of my previous fine art blog posts, you’ll know that I’ve been photographing Janine as she continues her battle with cancer. She recently returned to my studio for some follow-up photos after her double mastectomy surgery. During the mastectomy she elected to begin her reconstructive surgery immediately and that process is reflected in these photos. Janine is doing very well and is responding to her treatment. I’m sure that will continue to be the case and she’ll soon be in remission. As the months pass, I hope to continue documenting her progress. Please note that I didn’t post some of the more controversial photos from this session because of the family-oriented nature of this blog. Late last week Kent called with an inquiry about my availability. He wanted to book me for a fine art portrait session for his wife. What sets this story apart from others is that only two days from now, Janine is having a double mastectomy. Kent and Janine wanted to book a session in that hope that I would document her figure in my artistic style prior to her surgery. As you can see from some of these examples, I asked Kent to join her for several photographs to help illustrate his support during this difficult time. In addition to Janine’s portraits, I asked Kent to pose for several photographs on his own. As of this writing, they hope to return several times after the surgery to document in phases her continuing battle with cancer–a battle I know she can win.
I had this project in mind for several years before I finally found the perfect maternity subject. These images were created over a period of almost nine months and are presented in my signature fine art style. As you might imagine, it was difficult to replicate the same lighting for each visit while also ensuring a similar pose for each individual session. Although each pose is not exactly the same in each one of the photographs, I believe the slight variances lend to further the story that I’m sharing through this series of photographs.
