Whenever I create a portrait photograph of a subject, one of the first things that I ask about is how the photograph will be used and what kind of message the portrait should convey to viewers. In most cases, portraits should evoke some measure of friendliness so that the subject does not appear aloof. And whenever I'm photographing someone for business purposes, most subjects will ask for a serious portrait in order to imply that they are a serious business person and worthy of trust. All of those requests were made prior to me taking this portrait of a female executive, and I'd like to think that I captured all of those elements in this photograph. The image itself was taken using natural light in my old downtown Los Angeles studio.
