This is the favorite portrait that I captured of John Sanford during a shoot that I conducted on behalf of his publisher. The shallow depth of field and soft lighting technique serve me well this instance to soften the character of this author portrait. As an interesting tidbit, he was Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1980 for a series of stories on Native American culture and he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for a series collectively titled Life on the Land: An American Farm Family. I'd like to think that this photograph makes his readers want to learn more about him which to me is one of the main goals of any commercial portrait.
