This young woman was photographed at my studio wearing her Navy Junior Reserve Office Training Corps uniform. This image received a Gold Award at the 2014 WPPI Print, Album & Filmmaking Competition. As I was photographing the subject I was looking for a way to create an image that was more interesting than a standard portrait, and in that I think I succeeded. One of the things that I do when I'm photographing someone is to apply humor in order to evoke a natural smile. Because this female subject had braces, she was uncomfortable with her smile. However, I knew that she would be far more beautiful if she simply gave me a quick grin and so I worked aggressively with my humor to try and get her to laugh. As you can see, my efforts here apparently worked as she actually burst into laughter, closing her eyes in the process. I photographed a dozen JNROTC subjects that day, but none of the images were as interesting as the one that I took of the subject.
