When I photographed this gay couple at Walt Disney Concert Hall, they brought along a miniature version of Robert Indiana's Love Sculpture and asked if I could figure out a way to include that prop in their wedding photography.
To do so, I first wanted to make sure that I captured a motion between the couple and in that I think I succeeded. I also wanted to some way convey that the couple was married, and to do that I made sure that one of the groom's rings was present prominently in the photograph. Also, since the couple was of a mixed race, I wanted to celebrate that and the contrast of their hands held together with the prop seems to do that perfectly. Finally, since the prop was so small, I needed to make sure that this was a close-up portrait so that the message of love was instantly recognizable. This same sex couple had a wedding in Los Angeles, because they are from Houston, Texas and in that state (as of this writing) marriage equality is not something that has been approved by voters. I find that fact sad but unsurprising given the fact that I grew up in Louisiana where LGBT weddings are also illegal. Walt Disney Concert Hall is located in Los Angeles, California.
