Notes

Here are some general notes about the theater room and my installation.

Room Dimensions

The home floor plan lists the theater room dimensions as 14′ x 16′.

More precisely, the theater is 166″ (13’10”) wide x 190″ (15′ 10.5″) deep. The room narrows to 145″ (12′ 1″) wide at a depth of 150″ (12′ 6″).

At the theater front, the ceiling elevation starts at 102″ (8′ 6″) and slopes upwards to 119″ (9′ 11″) over a distance of 150″ (12′ 6″). The ceiling then descends vertically to 102″ (8′ 6″) and then continues deeper into the room for another 40.5″ (3′ 4.5″).

Accounting for the decorative columns, the room volume is approximately 1939 ft³.

Blackout

The room is very dark with black carpet, black walls, and black equipment. All outlets and switches are black. There are no windows in the room and door cracks on top, sides, and middle are minimized with insulating tape.

The ceiling fan is flat black and the register, return, and ceiling speaker grills are also painted black. All room treatments are black fabric.

The only reflective room elements are the subwoofers and LRC speaker side panels which are piano gloss black.

Benjamin Moore Century Obsidian black paint was selected over velvet wall coverings because velvet could potentially affect room acoustics and the lack of reasonably priced velvet options likely to yield a highly professional fit and finish.

Wiring

The equipment rack operates on a single 20 amp dedicated circuit. There are 2 additional dedicated 20 amp circuits on the front wall (one for each subwoofer) and a single dedicated 20 amp circuit on the back wall (one for both subwoofers).

All speakers and transducers are connected using Monoprice 12AWG CL2 rated 2-conductor in-wall speaker cable.

Subwoofers

The 4 subwoofers are optimized to operate from a single subwoofer signal using recommendations from the “Using MiniDSP 2×4 to Optimize Multiple Subs on One Channel before Room Correction” guide.

One of the two subwoofer Marantz sub outputs is connected via analog cable to the miniDSP 4x10HD. Channels 1-4 of the miniDSP send signals to each of the 4 subwoofers. Channel 8 sends a signal to the Behringer NX3000D that powers ButtKicker transducers.

REW measurements were performed after each adjustment to confirm curve and response improvements.

Calibration

The Epson Pro Cinema 6050UB 4K PRO-UHD Projector was professionally calibrated by Chad Billheimer (Chadb) on March 18, 2020. At that time there were approximately 300 hours on the lens.

Chad Billheimer (Chadb) also performed an Advanced Audio Calibration using REW measurements, MiniDSP 4×10 adjustments, and Audyssey App adjustments on March 18, 2020.
