Jean Olds, Colonial Warrior

Here Jean Olds portrays a Colonial Warrior from the 1978 television series, Battlestar Galactica. One interesting piece of trivia related to the show’s depiction of female viper pilots. Back in those days, and even up until the 1990s, women were not allowed to fly fighters. Today many of our top pilots are women. And thus we can see how science fiction can sometime serve as a forerunner for future events and traditions.

In Battlestar Galactica, with only one notable exception, women’s uniforms were identical to the men’s uniforms. Given the different dimensions of female pilots, although the piping details on the front and the sleeves are the same, the side-to-side placement had to be adjusted. The spacing and placement of the buckles is the same as well, and thus the upper chest parts must be reduced along with the shoulder covers. In this replica costume, the only major flaw is seen in the cuffs. In the onscreen jackets, the ends of the sleeves were gathered into the cuffs. This was a subtle difference on the men’s jacket and a more obvious difference on the women’s jacket. That detail is missing in this costume.

Jen is an energy efficiency consultant who works with public agencies in implementing energy saving retrofit projects for their facilities. She has been a dancer her entire life and has studied ballet, Latin ballroom dancing, and salsa. She also spent time in Spain studying flamenco dancing and currently dances the argentine tango. To help put her relationship with her husband in perspective, Eric asked Jen to listen to a song that he suggested they play for their grand entrance at their 2013 wedding reception. Jen obliged and agreed that the song was great. It was only later that she discovered that the song Eric suggested was the theme song to the original Battlestar Galactica TV series!
