Bride & Groom Silhouette

Can you figure out how I created this photograph that mostly include a bride and groom silhouette?

When I entered this photograph into the Wedding and Portrait Photographer International (WPPI) Print, Album & Filmmaking Competition, it was much discussed by judges. I think that's because the judges didn't understand how I made the photo.

When I've shown this image to other photographers, no one has immediately grasped how this photograph was made—which isn't a bad thing. I enjoy some mystery in my photography. But you don't have to be left in the dark.

On every floor of this hotel wedding venue, there is a backlit photograph that covers an entire wall. To capture this image, I positioned the couple in front of the photograph. The light from the photo provides a perfect backlight and creates a partially lit silhouette when properly exposed.

The thing I enjoy most about this photograph is that it makes you think and perhaps wonder at how it was made. I've created award-winning images on other floors of this hotel using similar techniques and I will continue to refine the style of capture at every opportunity.
