I captured this intimate photograph of the bride looking down a long table, watching her father present his speech during her wedding reception at La Bella Vita in Montecito, California.
The videographer was using 8 mm film and was only shooting in short bursts of just a few seconds. This moment was captured and lit using illumination from his video light. I position myself low to the ground using elements on the tables in the foreground with a shallow depth of field in order to frame the bride in the image. From an exposure perspective I had to act very quickly given the short time that the video light was present.
I was fortunate in that the wedding guests in the background had just enough light on them to provide some context in the scene while converting the image to black and white allowed me to remove the distractions of the items on the table as well as the candlelight in the holders in the upper right quadrant. This photograph was also quite difficult because it was captured outdoors at night which is considered to be by most photographers one of the most difficult environments to create technically well done images.
