This photograph of a wedding couple was taken at Caltech and includes several props that speak to the personality and interests of the bride and groom.
Both of these lovely individuals teach in a nearby high school. The bride teaches biology and is an avid birdwatcher. The groom is a coach and an avid sports fan. There are several things about this photograph from a storytelling perspective that I particularly enjoy. First, the date on the newspaper helps establish the couple's wedding date. The binoculars held by the bride are the ones that she uses every weekend when she goes birding. In the book, held by the bride, is a rare early printing of a birdwatching guide that was owned by the groom's grandfather.
In terms of this location, Caltech offers wedding photographers like me a wide range of interesting backgrounds to choose from when I'm photographing a bride, groom, or wedding party. Although a permit is required to photograph at this location, it's a relatively small fee that gives you a complete run of the property — which is extensive. When I first moved to Pasadena, I lived less than a block away from the campus. And I stayed at that location for almost 8 years. In that time, I naturally became very familiar with the campus and its surroundings and I think that familiarity translates well into the wedding and engagement session photography that I continue to do their even today.
