My goal was to create a dramatic beach portrait of this bridegroom near the Historic Cottage at San Clemente State Beach.
To reach the beach from the cottage, we had to walk down a long hill, cross some railroad tracks, and walked down to the shore the Pacific ocean across a fairly narrow stretch of sand. As you can see from the photograph, it was an overcast day with a chance of rain in the forecast. The ocean was a lovely shade of light blue which complemented the gray sky. That seemed quite suitable to match the groom's gray suit. Many of my photographs, even my pose portraits, feature couples who are laughing or interacting in only rarely do I ask my subjects to face my camera. But for whatever reason on this day I decided that I needed a more direct viewpoint in order to achieve drama in the image.
The time of photographing subjects on the beach, there is an added level of complexity involved. First of all, when I'm photographing a wedding, I have to be careful of the bride's dress to ensure that it's not immediately obvious that we were on the beach earlier in the day, particularly if we are doing a first look and the portraits occur before the wedding ceremony itself. Also, I'm very cognizant of the comfort of the bride and groom and so I always recommend that they bring a towel with them so that they can remove the sand from their feet which will make for much more comfortable dancing later in the evening.
