This photograph of a gay couple at Hotel Maya is a photojournalistic moment. It was incredibly hot that day, and as we walked around the grounds taking photographs, it was terribly thirsty work. As we walked past the pool area, a complete stranger ran out with two bottles of water and offered them to the grooms. They were incredibly thankful, and so they took a short break in the shade of the pool house and drank their water. I snapped this photo in that moment. The interesting thing about this photo is that it's a great storytelling image for the couple. It will remind them of the heat of that day and the kindness of a stranger — especially during the time when LGBT weddings were extremely uncommon. In fact, when this photograph was taken for this particular event, gay weddings were illegal in California. But that didn't stop this couple from getting married.
