This photo appears candid but it's actually a directed capture.
I've photographed many weddings at the Lindley-Scott House and several years prior to making this particular photograph, I candidly photographed a different couple in this same location. Although I loved that original candid photograph from that location, there were several issues with the image that held me back from loving it completely. As such, knowing that I again had the opportunity to again work at this delightful wedding venue, I envisioned making an updated version of that original photograph without any distracting elements. Today, even though I'm happy with this photo, I'm already thinking of the next wedding that I'll photograph at this venue and how I can further improve on this story.
This photograph was entered in the 2014 Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 16x20 Print, Album, and Filmmaking Annual Competition. It was given a score of 76 which indicates an "average professional skill and technique." I can imagine why some judges may have felt that this photograph wasn't an above average, but I do feel that this score was on the low side of what it might have scored in previous competitions. For the 2014 WPPI competition, there was one room of judges who were scoring prints much lower than is typical for this competition and I feel that the lower than expected score here reflects that less generous judging.
