What I remember most about this wedding at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in Calabasas Highlands was that it was incredibly hot.
It was so hot, that lipstick was melting and the guests were sweating anytime it took more than a few steps. Or perhaps that was just me. The bridegroom had dedicated one room of the house to their wedding cake and personal family mementos. They had brought along framed photographs of all of their immediate family members and position them around the room. When I noticed the bride's grandfather seated nearby, I asked him about his photograph and where it was located. He pointed to a nearby table and I walked over to pick up the photo.
Upon closer examination, I saw that it was a younger version of the man I just met along with his wife, the bride's grandmother. I asked the grandfather about the photograph and he shared a short story about when it was taken and about the many years he has been together with his wife.
He sadly admitted that she had passed along recently. I asked him if he would hold the photograph while I captured a photograph of him holding the photograph and he accepted. He looked at me for a moment, and then he looked away at the bride's mother, his daughter, as tears began to form in his eyes. I feel fortunate to have been in a position to capture this moment in the story behind it for this bride and I hope it reminds us all as to the power of family connections.
