Props can be a wonderful addition to any wedding day photography experience.
In this case the couple wanted to create a photograph that would serve as their thank you card after the wedding. They brought along this very cute string and then asked me what they should do with it. So I positioned them on my favorite wall at Pasadena City Hall, had them hold the sign in just the right manner, asked them to look at each other, and then I said something that was mildly amusing in order to elicit the correct expression.
If you're considering using props for your wedding day, one of the things that you should consider is that every prop should enhance the story and it should not be added just for the sake of having a prop in a photograph. For example, some props have come to be known by wedding photographers as being particularly trite. Examples of those props might include balloons or large wooden letters or empty picture frames held in front of the bride and groom. At one time, those ideas were new and special and incredibly cute. But then images started to appear on Pinterest and thousands of couples around the world began to copy those ideas.
Therefore, when you are considering certain props, I recommend that you find a prop it is meaningful to you. For instance, if you're a sailor and you love to sell your sailboat, that might be fun to find a sailor hat. Or, if you love to cook, maybe a chef's hat and a large wooden spoon would help tell a story about your personality that would provide a quirky view in a wedding day photograph.
